Gold Medal Waters is an independent fee-only financial advisor and registered financial advisory firm that has developed a specialty in serving the unique challenges and goals of medical professionals and their famiies - such as physicians and dentists - and other high income earning clients.
While a significant percentage of our clients are in the medical field, we also work with many other high income individuals.
“Gold Medal” is the designation that the Colorado Wildlife Commission bestows on the highest quality trout habitats in the state. Colorado waters can earn the moniker only when they offer outstanding opportunities for trout to live and thrive.
In late 2003, when we began to design the firm, we searched for a name that would give a nice metaphor for the financial planning and investment services offered—the highest quality financial strategies to help our clients thrive.
Four months later, on an early season fly fishing trip, Gold Medal Waters drifted into view and our financial advisors were hooked.
Early in our firm's history, we encountered a prospective client whom we'll call "Bill." Bill was an extremely well-educated physician who earned a very high income. Bill already had an "advisor" when he came to us; he was just looking for a second opinion on this advisor's work. When we reviewed his portfolio, we were shocked. Due to Bill's income and his lack of time to focus on financial interests, he had become a target - the advisor sold Bill all kinds of unnecessary investments and instruments.
We took over the financial "mess" that Bill's former advisor had created and worked for almost an entire year unwinding the former advisor's "work." Unfortunately, as time went on, we saw this same scene unfold again and again with physicians as the prime target.
GMW wants to see this targeting stop and wants to see it replaced with the same standard of care that physicians offer their patients. Our goal is to become a household name across the nation that is synonomous with good trusted financial advice.
Gold Medal Waters belongs to the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). NAPFA is the country’s leading professional association of Fee Only Financial Planners – highly trained professionals who are committed to working in the best interests of those they serve. All our firm’s wealth managers are Corporate Members of the association, while the firm’s principal, Matthew Kelley, and advisor Debbie Yeats are full NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisors.
The firm's president, Matthew Kelley, is also a member of the Asclepius Group. The Asclepius group is composed of NAPFA advisors who have a significant portion of their practice dedicated to serving the financial advising needs of medical professionals. The mission of the group, whose membership will be limited to NAPFA members (i.e., fee-only, fiduciary advisors) with a significant practice in the medical profession, is to collectively study issues that impact the financial circumstances of medical professionals and to draw upon the expertise of one another as we encounter issues in working with our medical professional clients.
Gold Medal Waters was the winner of two TINYpulse awards for 2015: the Raising the Bar Award and Employee Recognition Award in the Finance & Insurance industry. To give you some background, the Raising the Bar Award is for companies who improved their happiness scores over a period of six months. And the Employee Recognition Award highlights companies that have sent the most recognition throughout the entire company.
We are not just financial advisors. We are mothers, fathers, providers, caretakers, and people with financial goals just like you.
We’ve assembled a team of professionals based on whom we would trust to take care of our own families’ investments. A specialized team that holds designations such as CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Accredited Asset Management Specialist℠, Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist℠, Certified Investment Management Analyst®, Certified Private Wealth Advisor®, and even our very own M.D.
Before coming to work with our firm, many clients indicated that they spent considerable effort either trying to manage their family's financial resources on their own or putting up with poor service at another advisory firm. This consumed their energy and reduced the amount of time they were able to spend on things they enjoyed such as family and passions.
By delegating the annual planning work to our firm, clients retain the proper control, yet reduce the work required to stay on track.
You need an approach that you can believe in and understand; one based on research, analysis and evidence – not luck or prognostication. Compared to the typical mutual fund portfolio, Asset Class Investing can offer:
Because you can’t control the market, you should make sure you have the highest probability of capturing market returns – which gives you the highest probability of being able to achieve your long-term plan and realize your most deeply held goals. We believe the way to do this is by using Asset Class Investing, along with the guidance and experience of a dedicated financial advisor.
Many 401(k) plans are setup incorrectly, cost too much and don't maximize the benefits available. Some of our clients - mostly business and practice owners - have asked our firm to help them with their company retirement plans.
Plan Design Consulting
Over the years we’ve learned that clients who are focused on their financial well-being often desire to know what investments they own and how those investments are performing.
We realize that all good relationships are strengthened with ongoing, clear, and open communication. So to help, we’ve created an in-depth reporting system that allows our clients to review standard monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting with online real-time access, along with consistent communication, and regular meetings.
Does your current financial advisor get paid to sell you certain investments over others? Are they required to place your interests ahead of their own?
We believe that honesty, clarity, and trust must be present in an advisor relationship. Unfortunately, many advisors who offer “free financial advice” are often tainted by the need to sell you an investment product. The investments they recommend may be “suitable," but are often not in your best interest.
Our clients prefer us to consult on their financial concerns, not waste their time selling them on “how” a product would solve their problems.
When you work with our firm, you enter an environment where there is no commission or high-pressure sales. Clients pay us directly for our consulting, our advice and our management; This direct fee is the only compensation we receive. We don’t accept commissions and we don’t pay or accept referral fees. This eliminates conflicts of interest and ensures our advice is balanced and in your best financial interest.
As a registered investment advisor, Gold Medal Waters is committed to upholding the fiduciary standard of care required of firms of its type. We acknowledge our legal duty and our advisors fully disclose all fees, reveal any conflicts of interest and promise to select investments with our clients best interest in mind.
Investing can be an emotional roller coaster. Many people want to invest even more money at the moment of greatest potential risk and sell their investments at the moment of greatest potential opportunity. We’re here to stop you from acting when it is not in your best interest. We are here to take the emotion out of investing.
The Internet provides us with limitless information, so it is increasingly common for clients to come to us admittedly wondering if they could do the work themselves. Sure they can learn, but would it qualify as “expertise”?
If you have difficulty delegating, enjoy working alone, and have the want and belief that you have the expertise, then you may not need a financial advisor.
However, if you prefer to tap into a system that reduces your involvement, takes the emotion out of investment decision-making, and pushes you to make decisions to help you achieve your goals, then look no further.
Our advisors seek to develop long-standing relationships with the clients they serve. What’s the benefit to a long financial relationship you ask? It’s simple, knowledge. Your advisor will know your past, your present, and exactly what your financial goals mean to you.
We’re happy to answer questions and teach concepts. Yet sometimes, we become more of a guide helping you navigate today’s “buy now” mentality that produces financial confusion. Helping our clients decide what to do with the information at hand to help avoid emotional investment mistakes that can damage your financial wealth.
Call us anytime. At Gold Medal Waters, our mission is to help our Clients reach their financial goals by providing the best possible advice and service.
To do that, we’ve kept our firm small and personal – so we can focus on providing excellent service. When you choose to work with us, we promise to answer your questions and return your calls. We understand that your questions won’t just arise once a year. That’s why we’re here for you, not once a year, but all year long.
Active investment managers try to predict which stocks and bonds will "beat" the market. This approach increases trading costs, takes more time, requires more research, and adds more labor. In essense, it costs more to you, the investor.
Passive investment managers, on the other hand, don't try to beat the stock market. Instead, they aim to capture the returns of the entire market while focusing on keeping costs low and diversification high.
Indexing and asset class investing are two ways to implement a passive investing approach. Although they have similiarities - such as a focus on diversification, low fees and tax efficiency - indexing and asset class investing are not the same.
The former, indexing, is designed to replicate the performance of a market benchmark, such as the S&P 500 - essentially, index fund managers buy a list of stocks licensed from the owner of the index.
While the latter, asset class investing, is based on asset classes and seeks to capture the performance of a specific market segment, such as small company stocks. This approach adds precision and flexible trading, and is driven by academic research.
On average, actively managed mutual funds cost more than index funds or asset class funds. These costs add up and reduce your return. In addition, active managers, by their strategy, tend to trade more often than index or asset class managers, thereby generating more capital gains for investors. If the fund is held in a taxable account, there can be higher capital gains to report each year.
Asset class investing is the core of our investment philosophy; it differentiates our firm from others. Compared to active investing, it has less fees and offers increased diversification and tax efficiency.
Although we always prefer and recommend asset class investing, our philosophy is not so strict that we would not allow a client to use index funds for implementation if that was their desire.
One of the most important components of a successful financial relationship is truly understanding who you are. Our unique Wealth Discovery process allows us to create a custom wealth management process based entirely on your individual needs.
This process is designed to uncover what is most important to you, both financially and personally. We analyze all major aspects of your financial life such as your full range of financial needs, your timeline horizon, income & liquidity needs, as well as your willingness to take risks.
We’ve created a comprehensive wealth management process that will help you define your personal definition of financial success and allow you to translate it into prioritized milestones.
To thoroughly understand your specific financial goals, we must first take a comprehensive look into your current financial position, including strengths as well as possible gaps and weaknesses.
We also analyze the composition, expenses, and effectiveness of your existing portfolio architecture to make sure that your goals and finances are aligned optimally.
Development is our second step in creating an open, honest dialogue about your financial needs, beliefs, expectations and concerns.
Based on our previous analysis, we develop a long-term wealth plan focused on taking you from where you are today to where you ultimately want to be financially.
This process will allow us to address any items that need clarification and make alterations accordingly based on any additional information.
The next step is the implementation of your new financial plan.
In addition to creating your investment portfolio, we work with a team of professionals to address all of the non-investment action items we’ve identified during our discovery. You will also receive an Investment Policy Statement (IPS), which documents what we have agreed to and assigns responsibility and accountability.
Your plan is never static; it constantly evolves. This is why we make our Wealth Discovery Process part of our ongoing meetings, to make sure your plan always reflects your life.
We will monitor your plan closely and provide you with clear and concise reporting. In addition, as financial markets rise and fall, your portfolio’s exposure to stocks, bonds, cash and other investments will tend to fluctuate as well.
Through ongoing rebalancing we will make sure your portfolio maintains its target allocations. This helps control the level of risk in your portfolio and minimizes emotional decision making.
To ensure a successful financial relationship, your initial call will be held with our firm’s president to review our process and gauge your specific needs.
This will allows us to form a team around your individual financial needs and goals, as well as give you an in-depth understanding of our firm's approach and strategies.
In evaluating advisory fees, there is really only only one worthwhile question to ask...
Since our client fees vary, we'll use an example of 0.75% for this exercise. Theoretically, If we were to charge you a total fee equal to 0.75% to help you manage your plan and investments, does it seem probable to you that, with all the resources of our firm we will:
It is our belief that if a firm does one or all of these things, then they have earned their fee in many multiples.
Vanguard Research recently created a whitepaper that outlined the value-add of an advisor on the investment management alone. The paper placed the potential value-add relative to “average” client experience at "About 3%." Here's how they arrived at that number:
