“Gold Medal Waters”

It has a nice ring, but, where did it come from and what does it mean? 

Well…its roots are quite simple. “Gold Medal” is the designation that the Colorado Wildlife Commission bestows on the highest quality trout habitats in the state. Colorado waters can earn the moniker only when they offer outstanding opportunities for trout to live and thrive. 

In late 2003, when we began to design the firm, we searched for a name that would give a nice metaphor for the financial planning and investment services offered—the highest quality financial strategies to help our clients thrive. 

Four months later, on an early season fly fishing trip, Gold Medal Waters drifted into view and our financial advisors were hooked.

Active vs. Passive Investing

Active investment managers try to predict which stocks and bonds will "beat" the market.  This approach increases trading costs, takes more time, requires more research, and adds more labor.  In essense, it costs more to you, the investor.  

Passive investment managers, on the other hand, don't try to beat the stock market.  Instead, they aim to capture the returns of the entire market while focusing on keeping costs low and diversification high.  


Indexing vs. Asset Class Investing  

Indexing and asset class investing are two ways to implement a passive investing approach.  Although they have similiarities - such as a focus on diversification, low fees and tax efficiency - indexing and asset class investing are not the same.

The former, indexing, is designed to replicate the performance of a market benchmark, such as the S&P 500 - essentially, index fund managers buy a list of stocks licensed from the owner of the index.

While the latter, asset class investing, is based on asset classes and seeks to capture the performance of a specific market segment, such as small company stocks.  This approach adds precision and flexible trading, and is driven by academic research.  


Low Fees Matter

On average, actively managed mutual funds cost more than index funds or asset class funds. These costs add up and reduce your return.  In addition, active managers, by their strategy, tend to trade more often than index or asset class managers, thereby generating more capital gains for investors.  If the fund is held in a taxable account, there can be higher capital gains to report each year.  


Dogmatic vs. Pragmatism

Asset class investing is the core of our investment philosophy; it differentiates our firm from others. Compared to active investing, it has less fees and offers increased diversification and tax efficiency.  

Although we always prefer and recommend asset class investing, our philosophy is not so strict that we would not allow a client to use index funds for implementation if that was their desire.  

Honesty, Clarity, & Trust 

Does your current financial advisor get paid to sell you certain investments over others?  Are they required to place your interests ahead of their own?

We believe that honesty, clarity, and trust must be present in an advisor relationship.  Unfortunately, many advisors who offer “free financial advice” are often tainted by the need to sell you an investment product. The investments they recommend may be “suitable," but are often not in your best interest.

Our clients prefer us to consult on their financial concerns, not waste their time selling them on “how” a product would solve their problems.


A Fee Only Advisor

When you work with our firm, you enter an environment where there is no commission or high-pressure sales. Clients pay us directly for our consulting, our advice and our management; This direct fee is the only compensation we receive.  We don’t accept commissions and we don’t pay or accept referral fees.  This eliminates conflicts of interest and ensures our advice is balanced and in your best financial interest.

The firm's president, Matthew Kelley, is also a member of the Asclepius Group.  The Asclepius group is composed of NAPFA advisors who have a significant portion of their practice dedicated to serving the financial advising needs of medical professionals.  The mission of the group, whose membership will be limited to NAPFA members (i.e., fee-only, fiduciary advisors) with a significant practice in the medical profession, is to collectively study issues that impact the financial circumstances of medical professionals and to draw upon the expertise of one another as we encounter issues in working with our medical professional clients.

Minimum Account Size

While we have no minimum relationship size, our services typically work best for clients with liquid portfolios of around $1,000,000 or more.

Clients with greater than $3M in investable assets will pay a fixed annual fee based upon the complexity of their situation. Clients with more than $1M and less than $3M will pay a flat 1.00% of their portfolio value.

Are your fees competitive?

According to a recent study of industry fees, and through conversations with our clients, we believe that our fees are competitively priced based on the value of our services.  As with any service or product, there will certainly be providers who charge less than we do.  

If you are seeking to find the lowest cost provider, you may wish to review John Ruskin's Common Law of Business Balance before making your selection:  

“There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”


Why don't you have a set price above $3M?

Because we operate on a time, AUM & complexity system, the only fair way to correctly quote your needs would be to speak with you one-on-one. Without fully understanding your specific needs there is little to no way we could accurately asses your wealth management fee.  Simply put, our fees are based on the assets we manage and the time spent with each specific client. With such a vast assortment of financial needs and goals throughout our 85+ clientele base, not all fees are alike.
