We were contacted by a senior level executive at a large high technology company about her current portfolio. She was entering retirement, had accumulated a net worth close to five million and she was pretty savvy about understanding stocks.
However, she was not clear on how to "recreate her paycheck" from her investments and what to do about her deferred compensation. Her questions ranged from "Should I live on my company stock dividend?" to "Do I need bonds?" In addition, she was concerned about her investment allocation - was it correct?

After assessing the portfolio, three things became clear - it was not tax-efficient, it had greater than 50% invested in one stock (her company's) and lacked diversificaction, and it was not setup in a way that made for easy withdrawals, thus complicating the "paycheck" issue. We set to work and accomplished the following:Created a more appropriate allocation given her retirement income needsReduced the overall risk in the portfolio by eliminating the company stockSetup a total return portfolio to provide a simplified way to get annual incomeCreated a cash cushion that would cover income needs for two years.Reduced her total investment expenses by using less expensive funds

We made the process of recreating the paycheck very easy and were able to address both of the client's questions (No, Yes, and No, in case you were wondering...) In addition, by changing the allocation and eliminating the company stock exposure, we eliminated a massive downside risk that actually could have been realized given the 2008 credit crisis.
