The situation

A young man came to our firm after inheriting a substantial sum of money from his parents. He was unclear on how to invest his funds and what purpose they should hold in his life. One thing, however, was clear to him. He only wanted to invest in companies that were practicing good environmental policies and were following the philosophy of "do no harm." This young man was very bright, and while he felt he could figure all of this out on his own, it did not fall in his area of interests.

The plan

Since he did not have any real goals yet due to his youthful age, we did a basic risk exam and agreed that a financial plan might not be necessary until later. Instead, our firm analyzed his current inherited holdings and assessed any potential tax consequences. We then created a new portfolio for him that incorporated social and sustainable fund choices.

The outcome

Gold Medal Waters employed one of its social/sustainable portfolios designed to provide access to prescreened investments at lower costs. Our firm took over full management and the young man feels better about the purpose of the funds his parents left to him.
