A middle age couple came to us seeking to receive an assessment of their current situation and of their potential retirement in future years. Their assets included a home, two cars, and some investment assets, around $400,000 of which was tied up in their company retirement plans. They had two children who would be entering college in the next few years. Overall, they were seeking to understand ways to both minimize taxes and increase savings to make sure they were on track to retire comfortably in a mountain home to be purchased at a later date.
After clarifying and quantifying their goals (a retirement income goal, two college goals, and a future mountain home), we were able to discover that they were not currently saving enough to achieve their desired outcome. Our recommendation was to increase their savings both for retirement and for college in a more tax-efficient manner. By understanding what was required, we were able to create a solution.
The couple became much more confident that they were on track to achieve their goals. We are currently managing their investments and periodically reviewing their plan which allows them to focus on their family and enjoy the peace-of-mind that comes from having a solid financial plan in place.
